Need a Little Inspiration in Your Career Fictional Characters May Be the Key

Need a Little Inspiration in Your Career Fictional Characters May Be the Key Need a Little Inspiration in Your Career Fictional Characters May Be the Key For instance, you may regard yourself as sharing some of the characteristics of an inspirational leader of men, so you model yourself after such a character. In this sense, it isnt much different from forming a connection with a living person that we dont personally know. There is a technical term to describe such relationships parasocial. Parasocial relationships exist largely in our heads, free from the risks and constraints of more typical real-life relationships.Real-life inspirations tend to occur when a person motivates us to expand our knowledge and perspectives. So, a real-life inspiration may be particularly wise or go about their work in a particularly interesting way.Whatever they offer, they help us to envision a better version of ourselves, thus driving us to work to achieve that version. But can fictional people do that, too?Psychological studies suggest that they can. For example, participants in one study were asked to read a short story about a young man running a race. After reading the story, they were asked to rate howlikable the character wasand how relevant the character was to them. They were also asked to do the same thing for a couple of television characters (one of their choosing, the other chosen for them) and two people from their own lives.Perhaps unsurprisingly, close friends were found to be most inspirational.Next up was the self-selected TV character, followed by the other TV character, with casual acquaintances bringing up the rear. The key to the inspiration quotient was the similarity of the individual to the participants ideal self.Broadly speaking, this isa positive sign, as it shows that our potential pool of inspirational characters is almost limitless. Indeed, immersion into narrative worlds can create opportunities for growth in which experiences, perspectives, and knowledg e of fictional characters prompt readers own development. Parasocial relationships can provide role models, especially for those who are temporarily or chronically isolated, those who have limited social relationships, and/orthose with homogenous social groups. So, if youre ever looking for someone to look up to, consider a fictional inspiration to help encourage you to progredienz and find your lost enthusiasm especially in the absence of a real life role model.

The Ethical Lessons of Deepwater

The Ethical Lessons of Deepwater The Ethical Lessons of Deepwater For engineers, playing it safe is never the easy way out. Early December 2010 saw the release of two reports issued by groups tasked with deconstructing the deadly and devastating Deepwater Horizon Spill that occurred in the Gulf of Mexico. The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill and Offshore Drilling commission, appointed by President Obama, and the Deepwater Horizon Study Group (DHSG), formed by members of the Center for Catastrophic Risk Management (CCRM) at UC Berkeley, pointed toward many of the same failures. The DHSGs 60 university professors, accident investigators, petroleum engineers, social scientists, environmental advocates, and directors of research centers did go one step further, however, by directly linking mismanagement by the wells owner, British Petroleum, with its drive for profit. Analysis of the available evidence indicates that when given the opportunity to save time and moneyand make moneytradeoffs were made for the certain thingproductionbecause there were perceived to be no downsides associated with the uncertain thingfailure caused by the lack of sufficient protection. With oil and gas development in the deep waters of the Gulf, Arctic, and other new frontier areas set to continue, the DHSG also contends that the risks of such exploration and production pose likelihoods and consequences of catastrophic failures, that are several orders of magnitude greater than previously confronted.Pondering the Worst CaseThe prospects of failures far more severe are chilling. Yet, Lehigh University Professor John Kenly Smith, a chemical engineer who specializes in the history of technology, believes that forcing stakeholders to ponder the absolute worst is the only way to grapple with whats really at stake. If you are going to work in an environment where its physically impossible to go down there and get your hands on the technology, you really have to think of the unthinkable and nobody wants to do that, says Smith. Ill bet every day on that platform there were engineers thinking, If we have a blowout on this thing what will we do?What have we learned in the months since the worst that could happen, in fact, did? Perhaps not much thats new, says Smith, who believes some of the safety failures that led to the disaster stem from whats all predictably human and imperfect in all of us. Whats also clear is that engineers who design and maintain complex systems are in a tough spot. Here, Smith cites a few lessons of the spill1. Numbers can be deceiving. Theres tremendous pressure in the corporate and scientific worlds to convert uncertainty to risk, says Smith. Take an uncertainty, assign it a probability number then run it through a model to obtain data on how likely a failure might be. The dicke bretter bohren mssen, though, says Smith, who during his career in industry investigated a number of serious job-related accidents, is that 999 times, people get away with doing un safe things, and its only the 1,000th time that something horrible happens.2. Safety has to be hardwired into a firms SOP. Smith cites the success of companies like DuPontthe subject of a book he coauthored, Science and Corporate Strategy DuPont RD, 1902-1980with rewarding teams with the best safety records. You have to really drill it into people and create counterincentives that make them stop and say Will I cost everyone their prize if I get hurt? A hard-core safety-first stand also can relieve the tension between line functions that bring in the money and the staff people (i.e., engineers who raise the red flags). This is where ethics come in, says Smith The staff functions and engineers need to have the clout to make themselves heard.3. Simplicity has its virtues (i.e., technical controls can create a false sense of security). The jury is still out on why the Deepwater Horizon blowout preventer failed. Even if results of the investigations lead to future fixes, blind faith in t echnology can be dangerous, Smith warns When facing a problem theres a tendency to add equipment like a blowout preventer, and think Problem solved. In this case, it didnt work. Additionally, he cautions, adding complexity to a system can inject more ways the pieces of the system can interact and produce unpredictable outcomes.4. Think broadly. As the saying goes Its not enough to guard against the failures that have already occurred. Those that havent happened yet are the ones to fear most. Organizations need to prepare for the unthinkable, and when that happens, go beyond devising ways to keep that particular failure from happening again. Engineers are taught to be problem solvers rather than broad thinkers, says Smith. When something goes wrong, the focus should be on what was the thinking that got us in this position?5. Know where you work. Engineers, says Smith, have always faced one central dilemma Are we independent professionals who provide objective assessments based on our training and ethics? Or are we employees who do what the boss says? Clearly society needs the former, and because of that, he contends, its important to know an organizations history before you join it As a young engineer buried down at the bottom of an org chart, you might not see much or really know what a distribution policy is about. But studying up on whos running the company and the values it was founded upon can provide important clues about what to expect when its time to take a tough stand.Marion Hart is an independent writer.999 times, people get away with doing unsafe things, and its only the 1,000th time that something horrible happens.John Kenly Smith, Professor, Lehigh University

The Best Live Shot for TV News Reporters

The Best Live Shot for TV News ReportersThe Best Live Shot for TV News ReportersAll TV news reporters remember their first live shot. Its both thrilling and terrifying to know that what youre saying is being transmitted instantly into thousands of homes. Because there are no do-overs, you need to master the live shot in order to improve your resume tape or DVD and win television media awards. ansicht top 5 live shot tips for TV news reporters will help you deliver quality content, whether youre covering a school board meeting or a natural weather disaster. Plan How You Want to Use Your Live Shot A live shot is a tool for reporting, just like a TV interview, graphics, or other parts of a news package. While you cant control everything the moment you go live, you can decide how going live will improve your story. Many live shots happen outside of buildings, such as city hall. While you wont have the incredible visuals of a fire behind you, you can reinforce the timely aspect of you r report by saying, Im live in front of city hall, where inside these doors just moments ago, the city council voted to cut 1,000 employees from the payroll. You are telling the audience you are on the scene, covering the latest developments as they happen. Surprisingly, in breaking news situations, its actually easier to plan your live shot. If youre in a tornado-ravaged neighborhood, you can do a show-and-tell report by pointing out what you see and interviewing those affected by the disaster. Another common live shot scenario is covering a news conference or speech. Youll want to start by introducing the event, then letting it unfold, then delivering a wrap-up. However, these situations can be tricky because you need fill-in material. If your live shot of a 500 p.m. news conference doesnt start until 510 p.m. youll need to fill ten minutes of air time. Why Talking in an Outline Format Works Organizing what you want to say is critical in delivering a smooth live shot. Beginner s often try to memorize every word, but thats dangerous. If you forget one tiny piece of information youll stumble through your report, or worse, freeze on-air. Its better to talk in an outline format. Think about the bullet points you want to hit, as if you were giving a PowerPoint presentation. You can visualize the bullet points or go a step further and visualize what you want to say in pictures. For the city hall live shot, they would picture the building, the city council sitting at a large table, and then the 1,000 people with pink slips. If you Stumble in Your Live Shot, Keep Going We all stumble occasionally when we talk with friends or family, so its inevitable youll stumble occasionally while talking during a live shot. When this happens, recovery is key. To prepare for the inevitable, think about what you do when you stumble in real life. Youll likely say the word correctly, then continue speaking. No big deal, and more importantly, no one remembers your brief verbal hiccup. The goal is to achieve a natural recovery in your live shot. The more you make your live shot look natural, even when you stumble, the more professional youll appear. When Appropriate, Move Around Youve seen reporters for the broadcast networks deliver countless live shots in front of the White House. They all stand still speaking into their microphone. Its easy to assume thats the model to follow for any live shot because thats how the big shots do it. However, what works in D.C. doesnt necessarily work at a state fair, protest march, or natural disaster. As a reporter, you have the option to move around while reporting live. Remember, viewers want you to show them something, so dont disappoint them. Take viewers somewhere they cant go on their own. Walk around the state fair and point out the attractions. Use the camera at the protest march to show just how many people are there. Demonstrate the depth of a natural disaster by showing a residents home filled with water. Its easier than you think. Once you add movement to your live shot, the words will flow because you will be talking about what youre seeing. A moving live shot requires practice with your videographer because they need to know you have enough cable for their camera and your microphone. You and your videographer need to rehearse your movements in advance to ensure you stay in focus and in the frame. Failing to communicate with your videographer can result in a disaster thatll be captured on live TV. Wrap up Your Live Shot and Push the Story Forward The perfect live shot shouldnt wither in its final moments. Thats why you must plan ahead of time how youll wrap-up yourYou also need to think about where your story goes once the camera is turned off. After all, most stories dont end once you head back to the station. The people whose homes are flooded are now waiting to hear back from their insurance companies to see if their insurance will cover the damage is a good way to wrap up and position yourself for a follow-up report. Understandably, its tough to manage all the live shot components while acting naturally. However, reporters are expected to excel at being live on the scene, and your on-air career likely depends on you nailing it.

7 Ways To Create Beneficial Alliances At Work

7 Ways To Create Beneficial Alliances At Work7 Ways To Create Beneficial Alliances At Work The workplace a fertile spot for relationship development because- lets face it- we spend more time in the geschftszimmer than we do at home. But its also the perfect place to cruise for professional allies because right beside our cubicles are dozens of other people who share our interests, schedules, and the all-important access to the boss, points out Irene S. Levine, Ph.D., psychologist and friendship expert. Bonus If you are able to snag a work friend or two, a confidante in the bro will elend only make the day go by faster but it will help you enjoy your work a lot more, says millennial career expert Jill Jacinto. Who doesnt want that? So heres how toscore friends and professional allies at work.1. Take advantage of group outings. Whether your company hosts a weekly happy hour , optional town-hall-style meetings, or posts open positions for its softball team, Jacinto s ays you should say yes more often than no to these invitations in order to make new work friends. Thats because these scenarios pull you out of your work bubble and can connect you with people in many different departments, she says. This is a perfect opportunity to learn more about your company but also find friends across the company.2. Resist gossiping. Gabbing about the weird poster Anne has pinned to her cubicle while youre at the communal coffee spot may seem like a good ice breaker, but Levine says that participating in- or worse, initiating- office gossip can stunt the growth of work relationships.Be cautious not to spread rumors or gossip, she warns, because they can spread like wildfire through a workplace. They can poison the environment and reflect badly on you.3. Eat in the communal kitchen . Youre surrounded- probably, quite literally- at work. So, who could blame you if your instinct is to grab a solo lunch , or sip your coffee while you hide in the stairwell? B ut slow down, encourages Jacinto. Stop by the communal kitchen on your way out and chit chat with your coworkers- ask them about their days, weekend plans, their favorite Keurig flavor or lunch spot, she says. Just get to know them.4. Offer to help. If your coworker sends you a Slack message and wants your advice, take advantage of them reaching out to build a relationship, advises Jacinto. How so? Instead of replying in kind- whether on Slack or via email- offer to set up a face-to-face meeting so that you can take on the issue together, Jacinto says. Then, remember to insert some chit chat, like, Did you watch the new season of Girlboss on Netflix? or Have you heard about that Frye Festival fiasco? or Any vacation plans coming up? she suggests.5. Ask a coworker on a date. No, we dont mean in a romantic sense But ask a colleague to get out of the office for a coffee break, or see if she might be willing to grab a drink or a bite to eat after work, suggests Jacinto. Placing yourselves in spaces outside the office can help your friendship grow, she explains. People tend to be more relaxed outside of the office and let their guard down. Just dont spend the whole time talking about work.Of course, if an outside get-together does turn from friendship to romance - it can happen accidentally- then tread very slowly, warns Levine. After all, if things dont work out, you cant get divorced, she says. Youll have to be with that person every day.6. Find common ground beyond your cubicles. As Jacinto mentioned above, a big key to making work friends is to actually talk about things other than work. If you can get to know coworkers interests outside the office, you may find some common ground on which to build a friendship, she says. I had a coworker who I always traded music with and this led us becoming friends and going to concerts together, Jacinto shares. 7. Remember Not all friendships last forever. If you make new friends at work, realize that not eac h one of them will always be in your corner. Some workplace friendships do turn sour, warns Levine. If that happens, you need to remain civil and professional. You dont want to let the breakup interfere with your work or make co-workers feel uncomfortable.

Save the planet from your office

Save the planet from your office Save the planet from your officePosted October 13, 2011, by Elizabeth Fenech Get some career advice that the planet will thank you for, long after you get the job Is there one thing you wont compromise on when searching for a new job? 100K salary? Relaxed dress code? Espresso machine? Employees worldwide are increasingly taking notice of a companys green rating, that is, how environmentally friendly it is. In an age when household recycling bins are bigger than garbage bins and the human impact on global warming is hitting home, people are beginning to see the irony in recycling their newspapers at home only to guzzle their way through reams of paper at the office. Energy Australias Paul Myors is a senior consultant specialising in energy efficiency. Hes noticed that, over the past decade, Australians have begun to pay attention to expert warnings about global warming. People do actually think that we have already seen climate change in Australia , and I think that has contributed to greater awareness and made the issue more real to people, says Myors. With Australian households stepping up to the environmental plate, its time for businesses to take notice. John Egan, Queensland manager for Peoplebank Recruitment, explains the difficulties in searching for an eco-friendly prospective employer. It would be quite difficult to find many companies who either publish or, for that matter, who have documented environmental policies, he says. Paul Myors agrees that its time workplaces cleaned up their act. There are a lot of opportunities for businesses to be more energy efficient. Its not simple, but we cant use that as an excuse to not address the issue we should try to do better, he says. Not everyone has to install solar panels outside the tearoom though there are plenty of ways businesses can reduce their environmental footprint. Part of the problem is that people dont have a great awareness of the relative energ y use of different appliances. Turning out the lights is one of the simple things we can do. Earth Hour has given homes and businesses across the globe a push in the right direction. Elizabeth Potter, a spokesperson for Earth Hour, says the popularity of the initiative is indicative of a shift in the corporate sector. People are abfluging to recognise that businesses are taking steps that are genuine, long-term solutions to climate change rather than symbolic displays. Were seeing an increase in companies with buildings that are rated four and five star in terms of the environment and installing energy-saving lights, she says. Finding an employer by their green conscience alone isnt impossible, but another idea is to score your dream job with an employer who has that great espresso machine and then work to change company policy from the inside. Video Producer Job Description and Salary

Video Producer Job Description and SalaryVideo Producer Job Description and SalaryAs people continue to gravitate to information they can consume quickly and visually, hiring for video producer positions has seen an uptick. And it looks like the trend is here to stay. Read on for a look at the video producer job description and video producer salary expectations.Video producers are in demand at both creative agencies and corporate in-house design departments. Thats because savvy companies know that video is a crucial part of their client services - and their own marketing strategies. Video is everywhere - from traditional delivery platforms such as television to the smartphone in your pocket, says Steve Alt, director of media services at Robert Half, The Creative Groups parent company. There is increasing demand for video producers as technological advances have made it possible for companies to use video as a communications platform.Companies have a need for a video producer becau se of the way people digest content now, adds Mikey Goldman, a video production manager at Zuora in San Francisco. People would rather watch a two-minute overview than read a two-page paper. You can tell one story a hundred different ways, Goldman continues. You know that what you have is unique because you might have colored it differently, edited it differently, filmed differently - its your one-of-a-kind creation. You get to be as creative as possible and use your imagination.Beyond creative vision, video producers are expected to have a melange of both technical and soft skills. Here, we discuss what it takes to be a video producer and highlight why weve deemed the role a Hot Job.Video producer salary benchmarksAccording to The Creative Group 2019 Salary Guide, the midpoint starting salary for a video producer is $73,750. Most of the members on my team have bachelors degrees and at least three to five years of professional experience in the aforementioned industries.Video producers need to possess technical skills in video, audio and post-productionVideo includes familiarity with professional cameras (Sony PMW-F3 or similar), prosumer camcorders (Sony NXCAM HXR-NX3 or similar), various HD and SD formats, prep roduction/planning, studio and field production, lighting/grip, scriptwriting, storyboarding and photography.Audio includes small format mixers, compression, EQ, effects processors, audio recording techniques for studio and field, multi-track and waveform editing.Post-production entails digital video editing, still and motion graphics design, and video compression for multiple delivery platforms. The two most critical technical skills a video producer needs to have mastered are operating a camera and using editing software such as Final Cut Pro X, Adobe After Effects or Adobe Premiere, Goldman says. You need to understand various types of cameras, different lenses and how to create a certain shot, he adds. You also need to be able to pull out your camera at any moment to capture footage. While many video producers possess the technical skills needed for the job, strong soft skills are just as important to hiring managers. According to Alt, this includes stellar written and verbal comm unication skills, exceptional attention to detail, the ability to thrive in a team environment, and an aptitude for making quick, quality decisions. He adds remaining calm under pressure and having a great sense of humor are also big assets. There are a lot of very talented video producers out there, Alt says. I look for candidates who have the soft skills to thrive in our creative and collaborative corporate culture. Career Paths for Women in Technology

Career Paths for Women in TechnologyCareer Paths for Women in TechnologyWomen who want to work in tech, listen up The industry needs you, and its never been a more opportune time to pursue a career in IT.To build the technology workforce they need to succeed - and create a more diverse corporate culture - many companies are making a concerted effort to recruit more women. Tech giants like eBay, LinkedIn, Google and Microsoft, for example, have all reported recent gains in the percentage of women working in tech and leadership roles in their organizations. And Apple is ramping up its outreach efforts to junior high, high school and college women.Smaller businesses are making big strides, too. Consider software developer, ThoughtWorks. One strategy it uses to maintain a diverse workforce is to try to always include at least one female interviewer in the hiring process. The company is also open to hiring developers who dont have computer science degrees (which fewer women are pursuing today, compared to males) instead, the whole picture of a candidate is considered.Challenge = opportunityWhile more doors are opening for women in technology, the gender gap in the sector is still significant. (By some accounts, its widening due to lingering stereotypes and biases.) But dont let that dissuade you from pursuing a career in IT In fact, the lack of women in the profession is one of the big reasons you should consider this path. A challenge and an opportunity are quite often the same thing. To help inspire you, we will be sharing perspectives in upcoming posts from women who are working in three of the hottest areas in technology right now big data, security and mobile. These women will share their stories of why they wanted to work in tech, how they got started, how they overcame any barriers to success, and what they do in their current roles. We chose to focus on big data, security and mobile not only because they are the three biggest drivers for IT hiring this year, according to the Robert Half Technology Salary Guide, but also because there are some interesting dynamics around these professions that women, in particular, should be paying attention toBig data Businesses are in need of professionals who can retrieve, interpret, analyze and report on data. And according to Current bevlkerung Survey data, the number of people working in statistics grew from 28,000 to 72,000 from 2010 to 2013 - interestingly, about 38 percent are women. The Occupational Outlook Handbook from the Bureau of Labor Statistics also notes that employment of statisticians is projected to grow 27 percent from 2012 to 2022, much faster than the average for all occupations.Security According to the 2013 (ISC)2 Global Information Security Workforce Study, women represent just 11 percent of the information security workforce. Meanwhile, the information security industry is growing at a rapid pace and employers cant even find enough skilled candidates to fill roles already op en. The good news Initiatives like the Cool Careers in Cybersecurity for Girls program are working hard to show girls and young women why working in cybersecurity can be a rewarding career track.Mobile Without question, mobile application developers are in high demand, so there is plenty of room for talented professionals to make their mark in this field. While there is a significant gender balance problem in software development, generally, according to the 2015 Developer Survey by Stack Overflow, there are signs more women are joining the industry. The same survey found that women who code are nearly twice as likely to have less than two years of programming experience, compared to men. Could it be that the white-hot mobile app development market (both consumer and enterprise) is helping to fuspur this trend? How to Have a Great Relationship With Your Mentor- The Muse

How to Have a Great Relationship With Your Mentor- The Muse How to Have a Great Relationship With Your Mentor It used to be that you only had to dodge questions about whether you had a significant other at family gatherings, but nowadays you get to work and everyone wants to know about the status of that other must-have relationship. Do you have a mentor? What kinds of things do you do together? Does your mentor have a friend who can be my mentor? Maybe we could all double sometime. OK, I’m exaggerating slightly. But there is some truth to the fact that people spend an awful lot of energy finding a mentor because they’re “supposed to.” Then, once they have one, they think: “Now what?” Don’t get me wrong: Having a combination advisor, friend, and powerhouse in your professional corner can be the absolute best. But finding one is only the first step. Next you need to build the relationship. Here are some dos and don’ts to keep in mind. Do Figure Out What You Want Mentoring comes in all shapes and sizes. It’s not all meeting for coffee and reporting back. In fact, some pairs may never meet in person and only stay in touch over email. That can be great if you’re super busy- and not so great if you have trouble expressing yourself in writing. The fellowship program I managed had a mentoring component, and we had potential participants (on both sides) fill out a survey where they selected their ideal relationship. People could choose how often they’d like to be in touch, how they’d like to be contacted, and why they're interested in having a mentor- whether it’s to connect with someone local or to connect with someone with proven success in a specific industry. Be clear on your priorities by thinking through these questions before reaching out to someone. That’s not to say the other person will be available to meet for lunch once a week to discuss career goals just because you’d like that, but even approximations of this (i.e., yes, you’re hoping for someone with local knowledge and no, you don’t care about the industry as much as you care about general success) are a good starting point. Don’t Make Up Problems So, you meet up with your mentor whose first question is “How can I help?” Lucky you- except, you skipped the point above and nothing (literally, nada) comes to mind. You don’t want to spend your first meeting or phone call talking about the weather, so you think of a problem your connection might be interested in solving. Before you can stop yourself, the words, “My boss is a jerk!” or “I have no meaningful work,” shoot out of your mouth. But in real life, your supervisor is fine and you like your job. However, you asked, so, you now listen to you contact give 20 minutes of his best advice. And then, in every future meeting, he inquires how this problem is going. While you’re ostensibly bonding with this person, it’s not genuine. If you don’t have a good answer, a better bet is to flip the question back around. Ask her to discuss the career path she took. Is there something she wishes she’d known at your stage? Has anything she’s recently read or learned shifted her approach? Tell her you’d love to be able to connect and share ideas with someone you admire. Do Ask What They’d Like From the Relationship Along those lines, there may be categories of advice that your mentor is particularly excited to pass on. Maybe he’s an expert negotiator, or maybe she loves closing a sale and hopes to share that knowledge with you. However, it’s old-fashioned to assume that the mentor-mentee relationship is a one-way street. You’ll want to follow up and ask how you can make your conversations mutually beneficial. Come prepared with things you think you excel at: Maybe you’re both runners and you’ve discovered a great trail, or perhaps someone you know is throwing a killer event and you can extend an invitation. Offering to return the favor is more than good manners. It keeps the relationship balanced and can add to its longevity. Don’t Be Overzealous One mistake people can make with a new mentor is to be so excited at the prospect of someone who thinks like a supervisor, chats like a friend, gives pep talks like a family member, and commands a room like a boss that they suddenly want to go this person for everything. Instead of asking your manager a work-related question, venting to your roommate, chatting with your mom on your walk to work, and reaching out across your network when you need a favor, you see this new shiny person as a one-stop shop. In reality, your mentor should be the person you go to when you need someone outside of those traditional relationships. Say you’re having an issue at work that you share with your friend, but you still can’t quite figure out how you’ll broach it with your boss. Or you have a new idea for your side gig and you’re uncertain if it will work and could really use a fresh perspective. Those are the sorts of things a trusted advisor can really help with. A good rule of thumb to make sure you’re not overdoing it is to echo the pace and frequency with which he or she reaches back. If you share a meal and reach out a couple of weeks later to schedule your next chat, does he suggest you meet the following week- or next quarter? I once had a mentor who I spoke with by phone with every week. It just sort of happened that way: If we hadn’t chatted, odds are I’d get a call on Friday. But this is by no means the norm- talking a few times a year, or even on an as-needed basis is also completely normal. If you have no idea if you’re reaching out too much (or not enough), simply ask if meeting more or less frequently would work better for him or her. Everyone wants to have a mentor. But remember, it’s not just getting one that matters- you’ll also want to build a lasting relationship.

8 Actions That Get Job Seekers Hired

8 Actions That Get Job Seekers Hired 8 Actions That Get Job Seekers Hired 3The ultimate goal of any job search is to land a dream job with a great company. To get hired though, job seekers need to stand out from the competition and prove themselves worthy. For some insider tips, the below eight actions are popular to help get job seekers hired. A recent article by Careerealism about how to ensure you get the job offers some great advice. Inspired by that, we have developed a list of eight tips for job seekers to help them land the job of their dreams. Not only are these actions a great way to grab a recruiter̢۪s attention, but theyre also easy steps to ensure your job search success. Here are eight actions that get job seekers hired. You stand out: Standing out from the competition is essential to moving on to the next phase in the hiring process. Using subtle, but creative, resume formats or crafting well-written cover letters and documents are a great way to get yourself noticed. You show you are worth it: You can say how perfect you are for a job until you are blue in the face, but unless you show the employer that you are worth their investment, you won̢۪t make an impression. Use metrics and facts to show what you have done in the past, as well as relate those numbers to how you can make them a profit. You prove your performance: Again, saying and doing are two different things. If you say you are a big performer, have documentation that backs you up. Make sure to have references, recommendations, referrals, or testimonials to provide proof. Willingly offer these up. You offer a test run: Many job seekers don̢۪t feel like they are in a position to work for free. However, offering a test run for a few weeks may be what lands you the job. If you are awarded the test run, make sure to perform. You are searchable and active on social media: Recruiters and hiring managers use social media to learn more about candidates. If they can̢۪t find you on any social media channels, or they see that you aren̢۪t active, they may overlook you for someone with more information available. Make sure to keep your social media accounts professional and up to date, and be active with groups as well. You are consistent: Your virtual life, personal life, and professional life should match up. With recruiters and hiring managers harnessing the power of the Internet, inconsistencies could hurt your reputation. Make sure to be consistent online, on paper, and in person. You are prepared and well-versed: This is a major action that gets job seekers hired. Successful job searches are in part due to having updated and targeted cover letters and resumes. Additionally, successful job seekers research the job duties and the company to be fully prepared for the interview. You follow up and take initiative: Last, but not least, following up and taking initiative is huge. While you don̢۪t want to be a pest, you do want to say thank you, follow up in a timely manner, and take initiative to prove your interest. While a job search can be hard work, it doesn̢۪t always end in disappointment. By changing your strategy a bit and preparing ahead of time, you can have an increase in success. If you find that you aren̢۪t getting calls back or getting noticed by recruiters the way you want, take a look at your job search plan and see if there are places you could make improvements. Readers, do you use any of the above actions that get job seekers hired? Share your experience with us below!

Attorneys New Resume Makes Her Case

Attorney’s New Resume Makes Her Case Attorney’s New Resume Makes Her Case A legal-services job seeker receives a new resume from Ladders Does My Resume Stink? contest.Would you like resume advice from the experts? TheLadders.com Resume Service is here to help. Contact our experts directly, or if you’re feeling lucky, send us your resume for entry in our Does My Resume Stink contest. Each month one winner will receive a full resume rewrite for free. Now onto this month’s transformation.Based on a quick reading of her old resume, Eunice Napolitano appeared to be an average, run-of-the mill associate in a typical New York City law firm.Nothing about her jumped off the page saying, “Hire this person!” Eunice’s new resume makes a better first impression; showcases some recent highlights; and presents her story in a more distinctive, easy-to-read format.Best of all, her new resume effectively sells her without compromising the conservative and formal style expected of an attorney.Add the wow factor to your resumeResume clients often ask, “How do I ad d the wow! factor to my resume?” The only way to do that is to put the spotlight on the accomplishments that delivered great results for your employer. No amount of clever verbiage can wow readers as well as a solid accomplishment. In Eunice’s case, we identified three concrete results - missing from her old resume - and posted them at the top. To make room for the new “Recent Highlights,” we reformatted her education section and presented the same information using half the space.Without those three accomplishment statements, her resume sounds dead. The old resume consisted entirely of job descriptions, which summarize what she did in her various legal-services jobs - unlike accomplishment statements, which describe how well she did them.Resume tip: Delete the phrase “responsible for” from your resume because it sounds weak and passive to a hiring manager. Simply replace “responsible” with an active verb: Weak: “Responsible for handling New York and New Jersey cases in state, federal and appellate courts involving construction site accidents..” Strong: “Litigated New York and New Jersey cases in state, federal and appellate courts involving construction site accidents..” In short, start with active verbs.Make your resume easy to read - otherwise nobody will read it!Eunice’s most important information - her five years’ experience after graduating from Brooklyn Law School - was squeezed into a single, nine-line block of hard-to-read text. Her new resume breaks that key paragraph into three easy-to-read pieces. The person reading your resume - on first pass - typically spends about 10 to 15 seconds to make a quick decision (“pass or trash”). Because the reader cannot quickly digest a nine-line paragraph, she will probably skip over it. As a rule, limit paragraphs in your resume to four or five lines. In addition to fixing that key paragraph, we reformatted her entire resume for improved readability by adding subheads with horizontal rules. Finally, we achieved a more distinctive appearance by replacing the Times Roman typeface with Garamond. Roughly 80 percent of resumes use Times Roman or Arial; select a standard font other than Times or Aria l, and your resume will make a more memorable first impression. I know Eunice’s will.

Survey Optimists more likely to fall for scams

Survey Optimists more likely to fall for scams Survey Optimists more likely to fall for scams Is the risk worth the reward? Optimists who see the world through rose-colored glasses are more likely to think so. Unfortunately, this optimism on everything working out can lead these positive people to their doom, a new study on the kind of people who are more likely to fall for mass marketing scams found.Common mass marketing scams lure their prey with the promise of a large reward - as long as you’re willing to pay the small activation fee. Optimists focusing on the payoff ignore alarm bells of you needing to call to claim your prize now-now-now! ‘What’s a fee of $100 when the payoff could be thousands more?’ these optimists think.“Consumers with lower levels of education and high perception of benefits are at increased risk for mass marketing scams,” researchers from the University of Plymouth and Scripps College concluded in their paper. The psychology of falling for a scamYour assessment of risk versus reward had the biggest impact on whether or not you would fall for a scam, researchers found in their study. Activation fees woke some people out of their get-rich-quick daydream, but even paying triple-digit sums of money was not enough of a deterrent for some of us.When participants had to pay an activation fee of $5 to $100, about 25% of participants still had an interest in responding to the scam.“On the one hand, consumers are for the most part able to recognize potential scams,”  Professor Yaniv Hanoch, one of the study’s authors, said. “But the lure of the prize is largely driving individuals’ behaviors, leading many of them to discount the possible risks. The sentiment seems to be, ‘after all, what harm can be done by just responding to a letter?’ ”This is a cautionary tale for those of us who see dollar signs without noting costs. Keep seeing the glass half-full, optimists. Just remember not to discount the risks.

7 Recruiter Secrets You Need to Know

7 Recruiter Secrets You Need to Know 7 Recruiter Secrets You Need to Know 7With recruiters making a majority of the decisions to find “the one” for any given job, it should come as no surprise that job seekers see them as gatekeepers of their dream job. It’s equally expected that recruiters have a few tricks up their sleeves to find the best of the best. For those who don’t have the inside track to recruiting practices, there are several recruiter secrets you need to know, including the seven recruiter secrets below. 7 Recruiter Secrets You Need to Know Learn to beat the automated systems. Automated applicant tracking systems are more common than not. Most big businesses use these systems to help their HR departments manage the massive influx of applications and resumes they receive on a daily basis. However, many of these systems can disqualify even the most qualified candidate because of how they are programmed. To be successful in getting your application in a real person’s hand, you must learn how to beat online job application systems. Of course, if you have a connection in your network to help, you may be able to bypass the system altogether. Be consistent online and in person. Recruiters are looking at your social media profiles and how you conduct yourself online in comparison to how you look on paper, as well as how you present yourself in person. Be consistent across the board, because if you are a party animal online and talk yourself up as a professional in person, they will have little interest in trusting, or hiring, you. Don’t disqualify yourself. Applicants are often the ones who disqualify themselves. Since recruiters and HR professionals are looking for reasons to easily disqualify applicants, something as simple as a typo or as large as not following directions is an easy way to put someone in the “do not call” pile. Make sure everything is as perfect as possible so they don’t have any reason to not call you back. Use quantifiable information. Rather than using broad terms and concepts in your cover letter and resume, provide hard facts and quantifiable information. Instead of mentioning that you managed large budgets or teams, give real numbers and information that recruiters will be able to understand and compare. It’s the real numbers that they can look at and relate to the job you are applying for. Company culture is important. Although you may look like the perfect candidate on paper, and your interview was beyond successful, there is more to finding the “perfect fit. Companies are no longer looking for someone to only do the job. They are looking at employees as investments, and trying to create a company culture and environment that will reap the greatest benefits. Connections make a difference. It’s probably not much of a shocker that many jobs are no longer advertised publicly. Many recruiters and HR professionals use employee referral programs and other internal programs to attract talent. Building and managing a network is one of the best ways to find out about job opportunities, as well as get recommendations. Do your research. Researching the company is more important than you may know. Recruiters and HR professionals are not only looking for people who will fit their culture, but people who are passionate about the same things they are. Make sure you fully understand the job as stated in the job description, as well as research the company and connect with it on social media. The more you know about the company, its operations, and the business goals, the more likely you will be to impress the hiring party. Since recruiters are on the other side of the hiring process, many have developed processes that keep their hiring efficient and effective. If you are looking to get ahead of the game, keeping up to date on recruiter secrets and trends is a great way to do it. Readers, what other recruiter secrets do job seekers need to know about? Share your tips with us below!

A missing comma resulted in a group of dairy drivers getting $5 million

A missing comma resulted in a group of dairy drivers getting $5 million A missing comma resulted in a group of dairy drivers getting $5 million Unclear grammar can literally cost your company millions of dollars. Just ask Oakhurst Dairy in Maine. According to court documents filed on Thursday, the Maine-based dairy company said it was settling its comma dispute with its drivers for $5 million dollars. The case, over on a missing Oxford comma in Maine overtime pay’s law, captured national attention this past March. Drivers originally filed a class-action lawsuit in 2014 that sought more than $10 million in overtime pay, arguing that the missing punctuation mark was on their side.According to Maine state law, the following activities were not eligible for overtime pay:“The canning, processing, preserving,  freezing, drying, marketing, storing,  packing for shipment or distribution of: (1) Agricultural produce; (2) Meat and fish products; and (3) Perishable foods.”The drivers argued that the “packing for shipment or distribution of” was defining the single activity of packing - meaning, they were spared from the overtime pay exception list because drivers distributed food but they didn’t pack them. Oakhurst Dairy, meanwhile, argued that the law was taking “distribution” as a separate activity, so it did include the drivers in the overtime exception list.  On March 13, a federal court reversed a lower court decision and sided with the truck drivers, saying that there was enough punctuation ambiguity in the drivers’ favor.Unclear grammar has cost companies millionsOxford comma proponents argue that if the law had a serial comma, or Oxford comma, after “shipment,” it would have been clear that “distribution” was written to be a separate item in the law’s list.Perhaps sensing more grammar-related disputes on the horizon, Maine is taking no chances and has removed any ambiguity in its overtime pay exce ption list. Now, the Maine law has added semicolons to separate each of the activities not eligible in its list:“The canning; processing; preserving; freezing; drying; marketing; storing; packing for shipment; or distributing of: (1) Agricultural produce; (2) Meat and fish products; and (3) Perishable foods.”This is not the first time that unclear communication in words has spelled financial disaster for a company. In one typo horror story, a 124-year-old company was dissolved after U.K. government agency Companies House wrongly stated that Taylor Sons Ltd. had “gone into liquidation” in 2009. In fact, it was  Taylor Son Ltd. without the “s” that had gone into liquidation. The error was corrected in three days, but by that time, orders had been canceled, contracts had been lost and credit had been withdrawn.
